EDUCATION LEADERS OF COLOR ANNOUNCES THREE NEW APPOINTMENTS TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

Today, Education Leaders of Color (EdLoC) announced three new appointments to its Board of Directors. Nancy Gutiérrez, President & CEO, NYC Leadership Academy; Tequilla Brownie, Executive Vice President, TNTP; and Trevor Brown, Lead Partner for the Personalized Learning Initiative, New Profit, will collaborate with six other members of the EdLoC board in relentless pursuit of the mission to elevate the leadership, voices and influence of people of color in education and to lead more inclusive efforts to improve education.

Layla Avila, EdLoC CEO and Executive Director, said, “Our community is motivated by a desire to transcend the polarization in education by advancing a third way and provide Black and Latinx students the kinds of educational experiences that will transform their academic and life outcomes. Unfortunately, underserved kids are more vulnerable than they’ve been in decades as a result of this polarization, which has compelled greater urgency for solutions that meet their unique needs.”

More information on the new board members is below:

Dr. Nancy B. Gutiérrez, President & CEO, NYC Leadership Academy. Dr. Gutierrez joined the NYC Leadership Academy in 2014 and has served as National Leadership Designer and Facilitator, Vice President of District Leadership, and most recently as Chief Strategy Officer before being named President & CEO in July 2018. Nancy is a Fall 2019 Pahara-Aspen Education Fellow. Nancy’s belief in education as a critical vehicle for equity and social justice has inspired her dedication to education. Growing up in a disenfranchised Latinx neighborhood in East San Jose, California, she witnessed first-hand the impact of limited resources and low expectations.

Tequilla Brownie, Executive Vice President, TNTP. Ms. Brownie co-leads TNTP’s Client Team and partnerships with school systems, with a focus on building a thriving team and positioning TNTP for impact. She oversees TNTP’s research and evaluation efforts and chairs our Diversity Leadership Council. Prior to this role, Tequilla served as a Vice President and led TNTP’s work with school districts to design integrated approaches to talent and academics.

Trevor Brown, Lead Partner for the Personalized Learning Initiative, New Profit. Mr. Brown plays a lead role in the investment selection process, serves as a Deal Partner, and runs the Initiative’s learning community for peer-to-peer learning amongst selected organizations. He is an experienced growth advisor that has worked, both domestically and abroad, in an array of industries and functional areas.
