EdLoC Statement on Recent SCOTUS Decision Impacting Affirmative Action

We are disappointed and angry; but, unfortunately, not surprised. We have known this Court’s intent to stymie the success of our communities, undermine the rights and protections promised to all, and divide us since the beginning of this term.

The Court’s rejection of affirmative action in college admissions cuts against all that we value at EdLoC. With this decision, the Court is obstructing the economic, democratic, and academic advancement of people of color, further entrenching generations of systemic and interconnected inequities. Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s dissent was profound and powerful: “Ignoring race will not equalize a society that is racially unequal.”

As a multi-racial coalition, with many members who have themselves benefited from affirmative action, we know the impacts firsthand. For decades, affirmative action has increased access to education for people of color who were historically denied access, in turn supporting their economic and academic advancement, and ultimately, making our country stronger for all. Shamelessly, these cases also sought to drive a wedge between communities of color on this issue, positioning the supposed interests of the Asian American community against those of Black Americans, Latinx Americans, and other communities of color who have historically benefited from Affirmative Action. But we know that our fates are intertwined. And we will not be divided.

At EdLoC, we remain committed as ever to multi-racial solidarity and to realizing our vision of a world in which young people and communities of color have the support to capitalize on opportunities, build generational wealth, and thrive. That vision may seem farther today, but it is why our work cannot stop. The Court’s decision is yet another reminder that those who seek to oppress and divide us will only continue to do so, designing and redesigning the system to exclude us from its benefits. And so, we continue to demand, disrupt, and dismantle.

We are a community of values-aligned changemakers, problem-solvers, advocates and leaders. Together, we stand strong. We will harness our collective power, and we will fight for policies that will actively promote and expand opportunities for all.
